Resurface is a Chrome extension that helps you find previously visited web pages using natural language search. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information.

1. Information we collect

Resurface collects the following information to provide its core functionality:

Page title and URL — of pages you visit while the extension is active
Page text content — extracted from the visible text of pages you visit, used to generate search embeddings
Manual highlights — text you explicitly select and save via the right-click menu
Timestamps — when each page was visited

2. How your data is stored

All your browsing data — page titles, URLs, text content, and embeddings — is stored locally on your device using Chrome's IndexedDB storage. This data never leaves your browser, except as described in Section 3.

Your preferences (silent mode, filters) are stored using Chrome's local storage API and remain on your device.

3. Data sent to external services

To enable semantic search, Resurface sends page text content and search queries to a Cloudflare Worker, which forwards them to OpenAI's Embeddings API to generate vector representations (embeddings). This is the only data that leaves your device.

Text sent to OpenAI is limited to 8,192 characters per request
OpenAI does not use API data to train its models (as per their API usage policies)
No personal identifiers, URLs, or account information are sent to OpenAI

4. Data we do NOT collect

We do not collect passwords, form inputs, or payment information
We do not collect data from banking, email, or checkout pages (these are excluded by default)
We do not sell, share, or transfer your data to any third parties
We do not use your data for advertising or profiling
We do not have access to your locally stored browsing data

5. Permissions used

storage — to save indexed pages and preferences locally on your device
tabs — to open selected search results in a new tab
contextMenus — to add the "Save to Resurface" option when you right-click selected text
notifications — to send the daily resurface reminder
alarms — to trigger the daily reminder at a scheduled time
host permissions (<all_urls>) — to run the content script on all pages for capturing page title and text

6. Data retention and deletion

Your data is stored locally and remains until you uninstall the extension or manually clear Chrome's extension storage. Uninstalling Resurface removes all locally stored data from your device.

7. Children's privacy

Resurface is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

8. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected on this page with an updated date. Continued use of the extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
